In the perfect world, retailers would know in advance exactly what their customers want; what styles, sizes, colors, and other factors enter into each purchase decision; when buyers want to purchase specific items; and how much they are willing to pay for each individual item. If this were the case, each retailer would buy exactly what his or her customers wanted, would sell every item in a timely fashion at the full retail price, and avoid tying up capital by maintaining inventories beyond the exact needs of each customer.
